چکیده

We show that the timing jitter in dispersion-managed light-wave systems can be reduced considerably by replacing the erbium-doped fiber amplifiers with parametric amplifiers in which four-wave mixing is used to generate a phase-conjugated signal. We derive analytic expressions for the timing jitter by using the moment method for both the soliton and the nonsoliton systems and show that in both cases parametric amplifiers reduce the timing jitter enough that a 160-Gbit/s system is not jitter limited to distances as large as 4000 km. We include the contribution to timing jitter from the frequency shifts induced by intrapulse Raman scattering because this contribution dominates at such high bit rates. The effects of third-order dispersion are also included in the theoretical analysis. © 2003 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: 060.0060, 060.2330, 060.2320, 060.5530, 060.4510.

Gordon–Haus timing jitter in dispersion-managed systems with lumped amplification: analytical approach

We use the moment method to calculate the Gordon–Haus timing jitter of optical pulses in dispersion-managed communication systems designed by use of lumped fiber amplifiers. The use of the Gaussian approximation for the chirped pulses, in combination with variational analysis, allows us to obtain an analytic expression for the timing jitter that is valid for an arbitrary number of amplifiers wi...

Effects of precompensation and postcompensation on timing jitter in dispersion-managed systems.

We present an analytic theory of timing jitter in dispersion-managed light-wave systems that is based on the moment method and the assumption of a chirped Gaussian pulse. We apply the theory to a soliton system and show that 50% postcompensation of the accumulated dispersion can reduce the jitter by a factor of 2. We also apply the theory to a low-power light-wave system employing the return-to...

Timing-jitter reduction for a dispersion-managed soliton system: experimental evidence.

We have measured the timing jitter for dispersion-managed solitons in a recirculating loop for distances up to 20,000 km. The data were obtained with modulated data, 2(7) - 1 and 2(23) - 1 pseudorandom binary sequence patterns, at 10-Gbit/s rates and with an unmodulated pulse train at 10 GHz. We have obtained good agreement with our data, using a filtered Gordon-Haus model for the timing jitter...

Conditions for stationary pulse propagation in the strong dispersion management regime

Using the variational method, we obtain analytical conditions for stationary propagation of a Gaussian pulse in a fibre with strong dispersion management. We consider both the lossless fibre and the one with losses and periodic amplification. The analytical predictions have been checked against direct numerical simulations, and a good agreement between the two has been demonstrated. In particul...

Analysis of Timing Jitter for Ultrashort Soliton Communication Systems Using Perturbation Methods

We analyse timing jitter of ultrashort soliton systems taking into account the major higher order effects, namely, intrapulse Raman scattering and third order dispersion and using adiabatic perturbation theory. We obtain an expression for the soliton arrival time variance that depends on the quintic power of propagation distance. This timing jitter could be partly overcome by use of bandwidth-l...
